Somna
Furniture Design
“Somna is a lounge chair made from stackable parts that come together to create a comfortable place to rest. Designed for hospitals, university libraries, and workplaces, Somna supports moments of relaxation in environments where stress and fatigue are common. Short periods of rest and sleep can improve mood, focus, and overall well-being. Somna encourages this reset by offering a flexible seating system that users can arrange to fit their comfort needs. Bright and bold colors uplift mood and bring warmth into high-pressure settings. Each piece includes a high-grip material on the bottom to keep the chair sturdy and secure once assembled. Somna creates space for pause, helping users recharge so they can return to their work, studies, or recovery feeling more refreshed and focused.”
Documentation
The process began with researching existing modular and stackable chair designs to understand what’s currently available and identify common problem areas, particularly around comfort, stability, and efficient stacking. These insights informed the development of a design that could nest seamlessly while minimizing wasted space. Iterations focused on refining the form so that each component could interlock without compromising structural integrity. A major challenge was balancing ergonomics with functionality, and ensuring the chair remained comfortable for extended use while also allowing all parts to stack cleanly into one another.
